About Me

Welcome to Chamayal: The Veggie Food Spot.
Chamayal is a food blog devoted to my experimentation, exploration and discovery with food. It is my foray into the world of cooking trying out different cuisines both within India and around the world but within the vegetarian framework.

Chamayal in tamil means cooking. It is normal for women in the neighbourhoods to start the conversation with "chamayal mudinchacha?" -- "is your cooking over?" as the women meet in the late mornings after the men and kids have gone to work and school. The conversation would then turn to mundane or interesting topics, but cooking or the art of cooking was always the starting off point that bonded people and led them to exchange recipes or alternative cooking methods.

I was introduced to cooking by my mother and my mother in law, two ladies with amazing cooking skills. I grew up eating simple yet delicious recipes based on tamilnadu cuisine. My mother had magic in her hands when it came to cooking delicacies for festivals, that usually were eaten up within a couple of days. After marriage I was introduced to kerala cuisine of which my mother in law was the master. This is where I was introduced to using the coconut in many different ways. I learnt many of the delicious soups and breakfast recipes from my mother in law. After moving to the western world I have friends who follow different cuisines and you will find those methods/ styles too in my cooking.

In this food blog I present to you a combination of delicious recipes that I have prepared over many trails and errors. So it is an experimanetation in progress. These recipes are cooked and tested by me and my family. All photographs are taken by me and goes without saying that they are the copyright of Chamayal: The Veggie Food Spot. Please do not repost my recipes or photos without my permission.
